Safia

As a Yemeni refugee seeking refuge in Egypt, I faced unexpected challenges, including a breast cancer diagnosis. But in the middle of fear and uncertainty, I discovered an unexpected source of strength and support.

I traveled to Egypt when I began experiencing unusual symptoms in my breast, seeking reassurance about my health.

Upon arriving to Egypt, I befriended Egyptian women who advised me to visit Baheya Hospitals and Centers. Despite my fear of hospitals, I felt a sense of comfort and reassurance as soon as I entered the place. I was warmly welcomed by a member of the Patient Navigation Program team who helped me understand the procedures I would undergo. Following a series of medical examinations, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The shock was overwhelming. The word ‘cancer’ is heavy, and I had not expected it. I was so stunned that I couldn’t even cry.

My immediate concern was for my children who remained in Yemen. I had brought only two of them to Egypt, while the other three stayed with their father, who was also unwell. It was impossible for him to join me, nor could I leave him alone.

The doctor tried to calm me down, assuring me that I would receive all the support I needed from the hospital at every step of my treatment. Indeed, I felt reassured and began my chemotherapy journey, followed by a successful surgery.

After that, I started attending psychological support sessions where I met other women facing the same ordeal. I drew strength and determination from their stories. Every member of the hospital staff, whether a doctor, nurse, or volunteer, provided me with support and encouragement that made me feel less alone.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Egypt, its government, and its people for their warm welcome to refugees. I had often heard the saying ‘Egypt is the mother of the world,’ but I truly understood its meaning only after experiencing the kindness, hospitality, and unwavering support of the Egyptian people during my time here as a refugee.
