Rawda
My name is Rawda, a Syrian refugee, married to an Egyptian. My health struggles began in 2023 when I noticed abnormal discharge from my breast. I suggested to my husband that I should undergo a medical examination, but he recommended that I go to the Baheya Hospitals and Centers. At that time, I was unaware of this hospital and assumed it was a general hospital with poor-quality services, so I initially rejected the idea.
However, my husband insisted on going there and promised me that if I did not like the hospital, we would go elsewhere. After scheduling an appointment at Baheya, my husband remained determined about not seeking tests elsewhere while waiting.
I felt quite distressed and complained to my husband’s daughter about her father’s insistence on taking me to a hospital I did not trust. When it was time for the appointment, I went to Baheya where I was struck by the hospital’s orderliness and the respect the staff showed toward the patients.
I underwent all the necessary examinations, including mammogram and ultrasound, and waited for the results. I never imagined for a moment that I could have cancer so, when I received the news that I needed to have a mastectomy, I was completely devastated. I could not believe it and initially refused to undergo the surgery, thinking that the doctor must be mistaken.
My husband’s daughter did everything in her power to calm me down, advising me to listen to the doctor, who did not want to force me into anything but rather allowed me the freedom to make my own decision after explaining the importance and necessity of the surgery. I ultimately consented to the procedure because of the doctor’s humanity and his gentle manner, which helped me feel reassured and trust his words. He became the rock I leaned on in this difficult time, and the success of the operation was a natural result of his expertise and competence.
Tragically, his first wife had also lost her life to this illness. Upon learning of my diagnosis, he pledged his unwavering support and vowed to stand by me throughout my ordeal. Despite his visual impairment, he provided invaluable assistance.
I am grateful to Baheya Foundation for the support they provided, as they were crucial in diagnosing and treating my illness.
